Owlboy at the Raptus Convention
15.9.2009 By Simon

Hello again everyone! This may come as a surprise, but we recently showed off an Owlboy demo at the Raptus Comic Convention. I would have given everyone a fair warning in advance if I could, but nothing was confirmed until the day before things was to be set up, so I apologise to those that might have wished to drop by.
Time was really not on my side when I set this up, so it was a fairly bare bones presentation, but did give me the opportunity to study how people play and possibly to spread the word a little. So for those of you that missed our two day demo, I've uploaded some pictures to compensate.

Posters. Now with 'Wonder Tape Technology TM'
As mentioned, this plan hit us a bit unexpectedly. I've helped organise this convention (or festival as they like to call it) several times, and I was considering the idea of putting up a demo stand of some sort, but the organisers had kept pretty much quiet until just two weeks before everything kicked off, so something else needed to be set up. I managed to get us a temporary stand for two days, but we were lacking proper confirmation, and thus, we had to scramble to assemble something.

Entranced mortals captivated by our mindcontroll. And owls. Let's not forget owls.
The first day I set up a display in the basement section, sharing a room with boardgames and a Rockband stand of all things. While interest was slow, things picked up during the day, as Saturday is the busiest time during the week. I did run into a good few glitches, but it was really expected with so little time to prepare. The feedback was positive though. Meeting people that had actually heard about the project was a nice surprise.

People hoarding signatures, as one does. People hoarding comics, as one does. People do stuff apparently.
On the second day, the basement room had been closed off, so I moved my stand to the second floor hallway. Sunday is always fairly quiet, so naturally, there wasn't a lot of commotion around the game, but there were the select few that dropped by to fly into things randomly.

Pirates approve of Owlboy and will stab your shins if you don't comply. This guy complied.
All in all, a nice opportunity to see how people interact with the game. I'm definitely making sure to get things planned out in advance next time we do a public demo though. I want to thank the people that took the time to play the game and the people offering to promote the game. We really appreciate it.
Until next time guys!

Take it from me, Captain Swagger: If ye don't play owlboy, start limping!
I remember you did some comics in the past. Do you still make comics and did you had the time to show some of your artwork in the convention or were you too busy with organizing (and exhibit owlboy of course)?
As I can see, there were still some of these awesome pamphlets left. Still any available?
And pirate cos-playing in Norway? Way too cool :)
And a question about the Raptus Convention. The title says "International Comics Festival", did you get the feel of an international event? Were there a lot of foreigners there just for this event?
I for one was there, and I'd say that while the festival drew alot of attention from various corners of the world, the most international of the lot were the artist themselves.
Oh, and who will I have to molest to get a copy of Olwboy and one of those dashing pamphlets? If Simon, then Simon it is.

P.S. just because the title asked me so nicely: "First Post!"
